A Villager whose yard was ravaged by mole crickets has taken care of the problem and brought her Village of Caroline property back into compliance.

Villager Brianna French had new sod put down in her yard at 1096 Vance Trail in the Village of Caroline, which brought her property back into compliance.

Brianna French, who formerly went by Barbara Lurey and had her property at 1096 Vance Trail listed under that name, first appeared before the Community Development District 6 Board of Supervisors in March after she received a notice to bring her yard into compliance. At the time, she pleaded for more time to solve the problem, as her yard was largely destroyed by mole crickets, which left behind large areas of dead grass and barren dirt.

A complaint about French’s property had originally been filed on Nov. 14, 2017. The next day, the violation was verified and a Deed Restriction Reminder was written. But Community Standards didn’t have any luck contacting French, as the phone numbers and emergency contact number they had on file had been disconnected. Mailed notices of the violation also were returned from the property’s address.

A complaint was filed against Brianna French in November 2017 after mole crickets ravaged her yard in the Village of Caroline.

That all came to a head in March when the board agreed to give French until Oct. 1 to bring her property into compliance. At the time, she pointed out that the mole crickets, which are attracted to moisture, showed up in her yard around the time of Hurricane Irma last September.

“Most people say I have the best looking house on the street. Nobody is more upset about these mole crickets than me,” French told supervisors, adding that she also had hired a company to treat her lawn on a monthly basis.

CDD 6 supervisors learned during their Friday morning meeting that French had done everything asked of her. She kept the Community Standards office informed of the progress over the past few months and recently had new sod put down, which took care of the large patches of dirt and dead grass. Following that action, which solved the issues in the violation, Community Standards officially closed the complaint.
