Louis Zamperini was a rebel as a youngster. It was only his speed as a foot racer that kept him out of reform school. In 1936 he made the U.S. Olympic team and was congratulated by Adolph Hitler in Berlin for his flash finishes that brushed the holy grail of the 4-minute mile.
During World War II he was a bombardier on a B-24, which was shot down over the Pacific Ocean and survived 57 days alone in the ocean.
I was so captivated by this adventure that I bought a hard cover edition of his book which sits on my coffee table.
A re-release of the 2014 film is currently playing at the Barnstorm Theater in The Villages.
