Mary Catherine Curd (nee Scala) of The Villages, Florida, passed away on September 22, 2018 at the age of 80 surrounded by family and friends. Mary was born on September 21, 1938 to Mary and Alfred Scala in Brooklyn, NY.
Mary was the eldest of four children, graduating from St. Brendan’s Diocesan High School in 1956. In 1969, she moved from Brooklyn to Manhasset, NY where she raised three children.
In 1988, she moved to Florida, eventually settling in The Villages in 2006.
Over the years, Mary managed Bay Bowl and a shopping center in Port Washington, NY, worked in real estate and volunteered in many different organizations. She was an active member of the Sumter Landings Singles Club where she was honored with the Ann Potter Award for outstanding service to the club and community in 2015. She also volunteered for Dollars for Scholars, a charity that provides academic scholarships to students in need. She was an avid bowler most of her life and loved playing cards, bocce and shuffle board.
Most of all, Mary was a boat load of fun, had a wonderful sense of humor and hosted the best house parties, bar none, including a Thanksgiving Day celebration for 40+ relatives and friends, a tradition she continued since the early 1970’s. Mary was a loving mother to her three children; a doting grandma to her nine grandchildren; always dedicated to her family and a loyal friend to so many.
Mary is survived by her three children Ann Marie (Thomas) Fruhauf, Howard (Diane) Curd and Kathleen (Michael) Schaefer; her nine grandchildren Thomas, John and Timothy Fruhauf, Howard and Jillian Curd, and James, Michael, Madison and Jenna Schaefer; her former husband Howard (Eileen) Curd; and her brothers John (Pat) Scala and Frank (Carol) Scala.
