Dr. James (Jim) Nelson Moore, of The Villages, FL, passed peacefully on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, following a brief illness. He was 92.
Born in Indianapolis, IN, on May 3, 1926, Jim was raised in Cincinnati, OH. He graduated in 1944 from Western High School, where he was undefeated in the pole vault. He enlisted in the Navy and was placed in the V12 program for OCS candidates and spent a year in Annapolis before being honorable discharged as a midshipman.
Jim enrolled at the University of Cincinnati under the GI Bill, earning his B.S. (1949) and M.D. (1951) degrees. During his first year of medical school, Jim worked with Dr. Albert Sabin on the development of the oral vaccine for Polio. Following a year of rotating internship in Madison, WI, Jim enlisted in the Air Force, was assigned to an air base in Youngstown, OH, and rose to the rank of Captain and Flight Surgeon.
He subsequently returned to Madison, where he established a successful Family Practice, co-founded the Odana Medical Clinic, and served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at The University of Wisconsin.
In 1985, he was named Medical Director for American General Life and Accident Insurance Company of Nashville, TN, a position he held until 1991.
A Charter Member of the American Board of Family Practice, Jim served as the President of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians. He was president of the Nashville Area Chapter of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians and Chief of Staff at Hendersonville (TN) Hospital, where he also served as Chairman of the Credentials Committee and Vice President of the Board of Trustees.
An avid sportsman, Jim was an accomplished tennis player and golfer. He loved the outdoors, especially snow skiing and boating, and the family’s Morgan horses. He was an active member of the Hendersonville Rotary Club. He and his wife, Dottie, were members of the Poe William Sunday School Class at Hendersonville First United Methodist Church before retiring The Villages, FL in 2014.
In addition to his beloved wife of 47 years and devoted care giver, Jim is survived by 8 children, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
