Del Webb Spruce Creek man out $300 in bill-paying scam

A Del Webb Spruce Creek man called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy for help Monday after discovering that he had been the victim of fraud.

The 70-year-old man, who lives in the 9300 block of SE 125th Street, told the deputy he believed he was making advanced payments in order to lower one of his bills. He said he was told to pay $300 with a gift card over the phone by someone he believed legitimately worked for the company involved with the bill he had received, but then discovered that wasn’t the case.
