Woman nabbed after walking out of Summerfield minimart with $2.39 beer

An Ocala woman who demanded a beer from her mother found herself behind bars on New Year’s Day.

Kara Chavis, 24, was arrested outside a Summerfield Circle K, located at 14870 S U.S. Hwy. 441, early Tuesday morning after her mother said she grabbed a Mike’s Hard Lemonade, valued at $2.39, and walked out of the minimart without paying for it. Chavis’ mother also told the deputy that she told her daughter she wasn’t going to pay for the alcoholic beverage, and when she left the store without paying for it, she went and told the clerk what had happened, a sheriff’s office report states.

Kara Chavis, of Ocala, was arrested New Year’s Day after being accused of taking an alcoholic beverage from the Circle K in Summerfield, located at 14870 S U.S. Hwy. 441.

After being read her rights, Chavis told the deputy that she wanted to speak with him but only “with her attorney on the phone.” Prior to shutting the door to the patrol vehicle with Chavis inside, she said she “she wanted a beer because her mom was upsetting her” and she “just took the beer,” the report states.

Chavis was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with larceny/petit theft. She was being held on no bond and her court date hasn’t yet been set.
