Congressman Daniel Webster on Saturday weighed in on President Trump’s offer to Democrats to give “Dreamers” a deal in exchange for $5.7 billion for his border wall.
The deal was pitched by the president as the government shutdown marked its fifth week.
“This is a serious and reasonable offer by President Trump to secure our borders, begin to fix our broken immigration system and fully reopen the government,” said Webster, who represents The Villages in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Republican said he has supported border security throughout his time in Congress.
“While there is more work to be done to fix our broken immigration system, the president’s proposal is a good first step forward. It provides certainty for Dreamers and the tools and funding our Border Patrol have requested,” Webster said.
The president’s deal would offer protection for those under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals measure, put in place by President Obama.
Webster added the nation cannot “put those who came illegally ahead of individuals who legally immigrated to our country.”
