Villager arrested at his home after defying court order same day it’s issued

A Villager was arrested at his home after defying a court order the same day it was issued.

Michael Heath Buchanan, 60, was found Thursday afternoon clutching a kitchen knife as he was sleeping between a grill and sliding glass door at his home on Fieldbrook Way in the Village of Fernandina, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s office.

Buchanan’s wife called law enforcement when she spotted him. She was returning home from a court hearing that morning in which a temporary injunction against Buchanan had been made permanent, barring him from their home and contact with her.

A deputy took the knife from Buchanan and stood him up. A backpack found near Buchanan contained a roll of duct tape. He was arrested for violating the court order and booked without bond at the Sumter County Detention.

The court order was put in place after Buchanan’s alleged New Year’s Eve attack on his wife which sent her to The Villages Regional Hospital.

The couple, both from California, wed in 2018.
