A man free on bond after a drunk driving arrest last year landed back behind bars after he was caught driving on Morse Boulevard in The Villages.
Jerry Caldwell Helton, 62, of Summerfield, had been driving at about 6 p.m. Thursday near Brownwood when he was pulled over by a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy.
Helton admitted he did not have a driver’s license. Helton had been arrested in November on a charge of driving under the influence after he was caught swerving on U.S. 301. He had a bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey and beers in his car at the time of that arrest. He refused to provide a breath sample.
In his latest arrest, Helton explained his situation to the deputy.
“The defendant advised he drives the vehicle regularly for work due to him not being able to find a ride,” the deputy wrote in the arrest report.
A marijuana cigarette was found in the vehicle.
Helton was arrested on charges of driving while license suspended and possession of marijuana. He was booked on $11,000 bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.
