Mosquitoes will be topic of meeting in wake of Villager’s West Nile Virus death

Mosquito spraying will be the topic of a meeting next week in the Village of Fenney in the wake of a resident’s West Nile Virus death.

Villagers are being urged to protect themselves from mosquitoes as a result of the 74-year-old resident’s death in January.

The meeting is set for noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Fenney Recreation Center and will feature Sumter County Commissioner Doug Gilpin. Mosquito control spraying will be discussed. A Community Development District 1 supervisor is among those asking questions about the status of mosquito spraying.

In addition, the meeting will include other topics of interest to Village of Fenney residents:

• There will be an update on roads being constructed in the area.

• Representatives will be available from Coleman Correctional Institute. The massive federal prison is a neighbor of the Village of Fenney, and some residents have complained they can hear the announcements made over the prison’s public address system.

• There will also be representatives from the Sumter County Mining Association. Fenney residents have complained about blasting at a nearby limestone quarry.
