Villagers’ son claiming to be Seminole Indian arrested at Villages Regional Hospital

Derek Baum

A Villages’ couple’s son was arrested after claiming to be a Seminole Indian and refusing to leave The Villages Regional Hospital.

Derek Baum, 46, who lives with his parents at 1225 Pompano Lane in the Village of Silver Lake, was trespassed at about 6 p.m. Monday from the hospital, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Baum, who stands 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 350 pounds, returned to the hospital around 10 p.m. and refused to leave.

He claimed he was a Seminole Indian and he “owned” the land and could not be evicted from it. Several times, Baum was offered the chance to get in a taxi and leave the premises. He refused.

He was arrested on a charge of trespassing and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
