The release of an accident report is shedding light on the crash of a cement truck Wednesday afternoon in a roundabout in The Villages.
The truck, owned by Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete, at 1:50 p.m. had been negotiating the roundabout at Powell Road and Brownwood Boulevard when the truck overturned, according to the accident report from the Wildwood Police Department.
The driver of the truck, 45-year-old Steven Stewart, of Wildwood, had to be extricated from the cab by The Villages Public Safety Department and Sumter County Fire & EMS. He and a passenger, 56-year-old Jesse Lee James Jr., of Wildwood, suffered minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Leesburg Regional Medical Center. James had been able to free himself from the truck.
A witness who was following the cement truck said Stewart did not appear to be speeding or driving in a careless manner. It was determined that the rear suspension possibly broke, causing the truck to overturn, the report said.
The crash left a 1-square-foot pothole in the road. Wreckers were called in to remove the truck. The roadway reopened at 6:30 p.m.
