Sumter County Sheriff’s Office completes Operation Skimmer Sweep

Detectives with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office’s Fraud Unit, with the assistance of Florida Department of Agriculture inspectors, last week conducted an extensive sweep of fuel pumps located in county jurisdiction, checking inside every fuel pump for skimmers.

No skimmers were located at any of the 32 total locations checked.

The sheriff’s office reminds citizens to be vigilant when preparing to pay with a debit or credit card at the fuel pump. Look for signs of tampering, such as a broken security seal on the pump or a loose card reader. If you suspect the fuel pump has been tampered with, report it to the store attendant immediately and utilize another fuel pump. The sheriff’s office plans to coordinate future inspections periodically in an effort to keep our citizens’ and visitors’ financial information safe.

If you or someone you know has information about someone responsible for tampering with any fuel pump, report it to the Florida Department of Agriculture at (800) 435-7352 or call Crimeline at (800) 423-8477.
