A presentation later this month will offer a look into the future of garbage hauling and recycling in The Villages.
An overview of the “State of Solid Waste Management and Recycling” will be provided during the North Sumter County Utility Dependent District meeting to be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 20 at Laurel Manor Recreation Center. It is a public meeting and Villagers are welcome to attend.
“A long-range solid waste management is very, very important,” said District Manager Richard Baier.
He said the program will look at the future of solid waste management and recycling from a “global, national, state, Central Florida and Villages standpoint.”
The market for recycled waste has been upended since China restricted certain recyclables, including mixed paper – magazines, office paper, junk mail – and most plastics. Waste-management companies across the country are informing towns, cities and counties that there is no longer a market for their recycling.
Baier said this will be an important meeting and that garbage hauling and recycling “does touch every resident.”
