A Community Development District 8 supervisor contends data shows anonymous complaints are more valid than complaints in which Villagers provide their names.
Supervisor Sal Torname announced that conclusion after an examination of data on complaints compiled by the Community Standards Department.
Between 2014 and 2018, there were 2,101 anonymous complaints lodged in CDD 8. During the same time period, there were 260 complaints in which a name was given.
More than 95 percent of the anonymous complaints resulted in written violations being issued. All 10 of the cases that reached public hearings in CDD 8 were the result of anonymous complaints.
“I don’t know why we’d want to change the current system,” Torname said.
His position had the support of his fellow supervisors.
“For me personally, we’ve discussed it at length. It’s the best system we’ve come up with,” said CDD 8 Supervisor Larry McMurry.
He has noted in the past that he was the target of an anonymous complaint.
“It’s a dead issue to me. If we entertain discussion, we are giving them false hope there could be a change,” said Supervisor Dennis Hayes.
CDD 8 has been granting additional time to a handicapped Purple Heart recipient whose extended driveway was found to be in violation of the deed restrictions. He was the victim of an anonymous complaint.
