Firefighters scramble to Colony Plaza Walgreens as power surge forces store to close

A power surge wreaked havoc Monday afternoon on the Walgreens drug store at Colony Plaza and forced the business to temporarily shut its doors.

Crews from The Villages Pubic Safety Department check the roof of the Walgreens drug store at Colony Plaza on Monday afternoon after employees reported smelling a burning odor.

Crews from The Villages Public Safety Department, Lake County Fire Rescue and Sumter County EMS responded to the 3:40 p.m. call, which was reported after employees smelled a slight burning odor in the building, located at 400 Colony Blvd.

Fire crews quickly established that there were no flames and made sure the building was safe. But the store was left with partial power throughout the building so it was closed until the electrical issues could be resolved.
