Ryen Hunter Gills

A nasty battle between roommates Thursday over a visiting girlfriend left a Summerfield man behind bars.

A man called Marion County sheriff’s deputies to his home on SE 148th Place and told them that he had been in a confrontation with 19-year-old Ryen Hunter Gills. He claimed the two had been having ongoing problems and the issue on Thursday quickly escalated.

The roommate said Gills became agitated when he confronted him about his girlfriend coming to their house uninvited. He claimed that during the altercation, Gills picked up an umbrella and began to gesture with it in a way that made him think he was going to be hit, the report says.

The roommate said he asked Gills to leave the house and he instead attempted to hit him with the umbrella. He said he deflected the umbrella with his left arm, took it away from Gills and pushed him out the front door, the report says.

The roommate said as he was pushing Gills out, he allegedly punched him on the right side of his abdomen despite knowing that he had recently gone through hernia surgery. He said once Gills was outside the house, he locked he door and called 911 for help.

Gills initially denied there being a physical altercation between the two. But after further questioning, he claimed the roommate tried to forcibly push him out of the home and he “might” have pushed him back at the same time, the report says.

Gills was then taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with domestic battery. He is being held on no bond and his next court date hasn’t yet been set.
