An Amenity Authority Committee member has followed up on a call earlier this week to bring the weekly Recreation News out of the stone age.
Don Deakin, who serves on the AAC and as a supervisor in Community Development District 4, raised the issue at Friday’s CDD 4 board meeting.
He was following up on AAC member Carl Bell’s comments on Wednesday to get the Recreation News online and significantly reduce or eliminate the antiquated, largely redundant weekly paper edition. Bell’s comments were spurred by his concerns for the environment.
The Recreation News is expected to cost in excess of $800,000 to produce in the coming fiscal year. Recreation News is funded by amenity fees paid by residents. The AAC and Project Wide Advisory Committee earlier this year voted to eliminate the cap on amenity fees.
Bell has proposed the print edition be replaced with an app, website or email delivery. He also called for touch screens at recreation centers.
“I have seen these in use in a variety of situations and they work well,” Deakin said of the proposed touch screens.
He also took issue with Recreation Director John Rohan’s previous argument that getting Recreation News online is a “Herculean” task.
“The wheel has already been invented. The software is out there,” Deakin said.
He added that getting Recreation News online “could save a lot of money.”
