83-year-old bicyclist transported to Ocala hospital after collision with golf cart

An 83-year-old bicyclist was transported by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center after a collision with a golf cart near the entrance to the Village of Polo Ridge.

Villager Joseph Berthier had been riding a Via Montego bicycle at 6:01 a.m. Friday, traveling east on Southern Trace and attempting to make a left turn onto Oak Forest Drive, when he was struck by the driver’s side mirror of a 2015 Yamaha golf cart driven by 79-year-old Howard Edward Hall, of the Village of Calumet Grove, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The golf cart had been traveling southwest on Oak Forest Drive.

Berthier was ejected from the bicycle out onto the roadway. He was transported by Sumter EMS to the Ocala hospital. His bicycle had been equipped with a light, the report noted.

The FHP report indicated that Hall had been “inattentive” and had failed to yield the right of way.
