Hardworking Americans lose out under wage legislation

Congressman Daniel Webster

Last week, the House voted on H.R. 582, the “Raise the Wage Act.”

Democrats are embracing a policy that will cost workers their jobs, impact businesses and reverse the economic gains that we have made. Government mandates cannot defy the hard reality of a business’ ledger. Top down government wage mandates force employers to cut work hours and positions to offset new costs.

While under this bill, some individuals would receive a pay raise and more than 145,000 Floridians would lose 100 percent of their salary, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

In fact, millions of Americans would lose their salaries, as more than 3.7 million jobs would be lost as a result of this bill.

Hardworking employees deserve good wages, and that will always be best determined between the employee and employer, not by bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.

Congressman Daniel Webster represents The Villages in the U.S. House of Representatives.
