President Trump

The venue in The Villages where President Trump will speak Tuesday apparently has been decided.

The president is expected to address a small, invitation-only crowd at The Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center in Spanish Springs Town Square. He is expected to talk about Medicare, which affects the large majority of the 125,000-plus residents living in the mega-retirement community.

Trump has proposed sweeping changes to Medicare in his latest budget that are being viewed by some as drastic cuts – to the tune of more than $845 billion over the next 10 years. But an official in the Office of Management and Budget has repeatedly claimed that the president isn’t cutting Medicare but instead is axing waste and abuse and pushing reforms that lower drug costs – an area where the government agency spends a great deal of money.

The time of Tuesday’s visit and the guest list of attendees hasn’t yet been announced. Members of Villagers for Trump, a grassroots effort in The Villages that boasts more than 1,700 members and clearly has become the choice of area Republicans, are hoping to be included.

The Sharon holds close to 1,000 people but the group that will hear Trump speak is expected to be much smaller.
