A convicted sex offender is in the Marion County Jail for not notifying law enforcement that he moved away from his listed address in Summerfield.
David William Culbreth, 54, stands charged with failing to report a name or residence change, failure to report he was vacating a residence within 48 hours, and failure to register changes to his employment information.
Culbreth, who was convicted in 2002 of lewd and lascivious behavior with a victim under 16 years old in Polk County, registered his address at 17785 SE 28th Court in March. A Marion County sheriff’s deputy trying to verify Culbreth’s address made several visits to the residence without seeing him. The property owner said he wasn’t allowed on the property any longer, according to the sheriff’s office report.
On Aug. 21, another deputy responded to the home, where a female resident said Culbreth moved out about a month ago and she hadn’t seen him since. She said he didn’t stay at the house, but instead lived in a tent behind the house, the report said.
Contacted by phone, the homeowner said he didn’t know what was going on with Culbreth. He said he offered Culbreth a place to stay (a tent in the backyard), but that he hadn’t seen him on the property or in the tent in a month. The homeowner said he had seen Culbreth at Action Labor in Ocala, where he gave him the deputy’s card. He said Culbreth told him he is sleeping in the woods in Ocala, according to the report.
The manager at Action Labor said Culbreth started working there on July 2, and he hadn’t showed up for work since Aug. 19. The manager provided the name of another Action Labor worker and said he believed Culbreth was staying with him. That man, who happened to be in the agency’s lobby waiting for an employer to pick him up for an evening shift, said he and Culbreth are homeless and were staying in the woods behind Johnson’s Tire City, the report said.
Culbreth was arrested Monday and is being held on $9,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Oct. 1.
