Data from the state shows that the majority of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in and around The Villages are generator ready in case of an emergency.
In 2017 in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, 12 people died in a nursing home in Hollywood when air conditioning was lost due to a power outage. That prompted then-Gov. Rick Scott to mandate that nursing homes maintain generators and an adequate fuel supply to keep temperatures under 81 degrees.
Some facilities in the state have requested waivers and have not fulfilled the generator mandate.
However, data from the state shows that the vast majority of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in The Villages and surrounding area have taken that mandate seriously and are prepared.
Most have fully implemented permanent generators in place and ready to go.
Data shows that only two nursing homes in the area have been granted temporary waivers when it comes to the generator requirement.
They are Cypress Care Center in Wildwood, which state data shows is waiting for a temporary generator to be delivered, and Lady Lake Specialty Care, which has a temporary generator onsite.
Cypress Care Center has 180 beds and Lady Lake Specialty Care has 145 beds.
