Villager in rehab ripped off of more than $45,000

A Villager in rehab was ripped off of more than $45,000, leading to the arrest of her son’s boyfriend.

The 60-year-old woman broke her ankle in March and was a patient at Villages Rehab on County Road 466 in Lady Lake. She had surgery and was scheduled for a period of rehabilitation during which she turned over her finances to her 26-year-old son who was staying in her home on Harper Place in the Oak Meadows section of The Villages. Her son’s boyfriend was staying at the home, too, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

She contacted SunTrust bank to pay her credit card bill and learned there had been $4,400 in charges which she had not authorized. Those turned out to be purchases at Target, Best Buy and Walgreens. SunTrust also informed her that her home equity account had gone from $40,000 to $82,000 in a single month.

The woman confronted her son and his boyfriend, 21-year-old Schaun Long. He retaliated with verbal threats toward her and “became very defensive,” the report said.

A detective with the Lady Lake Police Department obtained a warrant for Long’s arrest on a felony charge of grand theft.

This past Wednesday, Long was located in the Citrus County Jail and arrest on the warrant.
