Villages official wonders ‘Why are we buying pickleballs?’

A Villages official is wondering why amenity money is being used to pay for $100,000 worth of pickleballs every year.

The Dura Fast 40 pickleball has been approved as the standard in The Villages.

Project Wide Advisory Committee member Don Wiley raised the question when the group met Monday morning to discuss adopting the Dura Fast 40 pickleball as the standard pickleball in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.

“When I golf, I bring my own balls,” said Wiley, who serves as chairman of the Community Development District 10 Board of Supervisors.

He said purchasing pickleballs for residents to use is favoring one activity over the others.

Not so, said John Rohan of the Recreation Department.

He said amenity money is used to buy basketballs, softballs and table tennis balls.

“It’s an understanding of what our residents want and expect,”  Rohan said.

The Recreation Department purchases approximately 5,000 dozen yellow pickleballs.

PWAC approved Dura Fast 40 as the standard pickleball in The Villages. The balls are durable and have a long life, Rohan said.
