77-year-old Stonecrester caught in scam after sharing bank account number

A 77-year-old Stonecrest woman sought help from a Marion County sheriff’s deputy last week after realizing she was the victim of fraud.

The victim, who lives in the 11000 block of SE 174th Loop, told the deputy she had received a phone message advising her of the possibility of a breach on her account. She said she believed the call came from her bank, so she returned it and was asked to verify her account information to determine if an issue had taken place.

The woman said she gave the person she was speaking with her account number and was told to cut up her debit card and a new one would be sent to her. Shortly after that conversation, her bank reported two separate transactions that she didn’t authorize.

The woman told the deputy she had filed a report with her bank but personnel there had declined to reimburse her for the lost money. The deputy planned to follow up with the bank during his next duty shift.
