Stolen Wal-Mart electronic shopping cart turns up at Summerfield doctor’s office

A stolen electronic Wal-Mart shopping cart that had been partially repainted was found Tuesday behind a Summerfield doctor’s office – a mile and half from the store.

An employee at Dr. Vikram Mehta’s practice, located at 17051 S U.S. Hwy. 27/441, called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy after reviewing security camera footage and seeing a white male pull the electric shopping cart behind the medical office and plug its cord into an outside outlet. The employee said the man then left the property, a sheriff’s office report states.

The deputy reported that parts of the blue cart had been painted black and there was no business name on it. He took photos of the cart and then went to the Summerfield Wal-Mart, located at 17961 S Hwy. 41, where a loss prevention officer said the store is the only one she knows of in the area that uses blue electric shopping carts.

The loss prevention officer also told the deputy that the electronic carts aren’t sold or throw away, as they are returned to the manufacturer for credit toward new ones. She said she would have a maintenance employee respond to the doctor’s office to retrieve the cart, the report says.
