Leesburg commissioners OK plan to purchase three new police patrol vehicles

Leesburg commissioners gave their blessings Monday night for the city’s police department to purchase three new patrol vehicles.

The Leesburg Police Department is preparing to purchase three new 2020 Ford Interceptor vehicles similar to the one pictured above.

The city agreed to spend a little more than $138,000 for the entire package, which includes three 2020 Ford Interceptor utility vehicles and the necessary equipment to properly outfit them for service. Two of the vehicles will be for regular road patrol and the third one will be for a K-9 officer.

The cost of the three vehicles is $102,700. The cost for the accessories and lighting for the SUVs will be $35,320.58.

The new vehicles, which are being purchased from Alan Jay Fleet Sales, will replace a 2010 Chevy Tahoe K-9 vehicle with 5,353 hours on it, which equates to 214,120 miles; a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria with 104,065 miles; and a 2012 Dodge Charger with 102,986 miles. K-9 vehicles frequently are kept running when the officer is out of the vehicle so the air conditioning can keep the dog cool and safe.

Public Safety Supply USA will handle the installation of the equipment on the three vehicles at its facility in Orlando. The installation, specifically the wiring of equipment, must be completed in accordance with city specifications so that technicians will be able to efficiently troubleshoot any problems that could occur in the future.
