The father of a Villages Charter School student was jailed after attempting to reach his child on social media in defiance of a court order.
James Mellor, 55, of Fruitand Park, continued to be held this weekend at the Sumter County Detention Center following his arrest last week by Sumter County sheriff’s deputies.
Mellor had originally been arrested earlier this year after Villages Charter School staff alerted social services when a student reported her mother had been threatened with a gun over the holidays. Mellor was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He had been free on bond prior to last week’s arrest.
As a result of that incident, Mellor’s estranged wife sought orders of protection for herself and her minor children.
Last week, law enforcement was notified after Mellor sent a friend request to one of the children through Snapchat. The contact was determined to have violated the court order.
Mellor’s next court date is scheduled for Dec. 2 in Lake County.
