A woman who admitted to taking medication before she was involved in a two-car crash in 2018 near Rohan Recreation Center in The Villages has landed back behind bars.
Sharon Lynn Freels, 55, was booked Tuesday at the Lake County Jail on a warrant charging her with violating her probation on a charge of driving under the influence.
Last year in Sumter County Court, Freels entered a plea of no contest to a charge of driving under the influence with property damage. She lost her driver’s license for six months, was placed on probation for one year and was ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
She had been found slumped over and appeared to be sleeping in her gray four-door sedan when Sumter County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene of the crash at about 9:30 a.m. Dec. 3, 2018 at 735 Kristen Lane, according to an arrest report. She said she had been in a hurry to get to work, changed lanes and hit another car.
The other driver said Freels’ vehicle had been “swerving” and he believed she “was on something,” the arrest report said.
During field sobriety exercises, Freels was “unsteady” and failed to touch the tip of her nose as directed. Freels admitted that at about 6 a.m. that morning she had taken the depressant Amitriptyline and Depakote, a medication used to treat seizures and bipolar disorder.
