Only six new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the tri-county area on Wednesday as Florida topped 42,000 cases of the potentially deadly virus.

Locally, there are now 709 cases divided upon Sumter, Lake and Marion counties. There also have been 34 deaths and 138 people have been hospitalized.

Sumter County is reporting 245 cases, up just one from Tuesday. They are divided upon 175 men, 67 women and three non-residents. There have been 15 deaths and 42 people hospitalized.

Lake County also went up just one case in a 24-hour period to 247. Those are comprised of 116 men, 119 women and 12 non-residents. There have been 14 deaths and 66 people have required some form of hospital care.

Marion County added four COVID-19 cases, bringing its total to 217. They are divided among 92 men, 120 women and five non-residents. There also have been five deaths and 30 people hospitalized.

Seventy-eight of the tri-county cases have been identified in The Villages. Others in the local area have been reported in Ocala (150), Leesburg (39), Summerfield (26), Lady Lake (10), Wildwood (9), Lady Lake portion of Sumter County (7), Belleview (6) and Oxford (2).

A total of 117 cases have been reported at the Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell among 101 inmates and 16 staff members. Three cases also have been identified at the federal prison in Coleman – two staff members and one inmate.

All told, Florida is reporting 42,402 cases, with 41,236 of those being among residents. There have been 1,827 deaths and 7,595 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
