New COVID-19 cases slowing to a crawl in tri-county area as state tallies 46,422

New Coronavirus cases slowed to a crawl in the tri-county area Monday, with just four new patients being identified.

There are now a total of 729 COVID-19 cases in Sumter, Lake and Marion counties. There have been 35 deaths and 142 people have required hospital care of some sort.

Sumter County increased by one case to 252 from Sunday to Monday among 179 men, 70 women and three non-residents. There have been 16 deaths and 44 people have been hospitalized.

Of the Sumter County cases, 121 are in Bushnell, with all but three of those being at the Sumter Correctional Institution (102 inmates and 16 staff members. Another 63 are in The Villages, 13 are in Oxford and nine are in Wildwood. Other Sumter County areas reporting COVID-19 cases include Lake Panasoffkee (22), Wildwood (9), Webster (7), Lady Lake portion of the county (6), Sumterville (4) and Coleman (3). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting five cases among two inmates and three staff members.

Marion County also increased by one case to 223. Those are divided upon 95 men, 123 women and five non-residents. There have been five deaths and 31 people have been hospitalized.

The overwhelming majority of Marion County cases – 158 – have been reported in Ocala, with another 26 in Summerfield and at least one in The Villages. Other Marion County cases have been identified in Dunnellon (10), Citra (7), Belleview (6), Ocklawaha (4), Anthony (3), Reddick (2) and Silver Springs (1).

Lake County increased by two cases in a 24-hour period to 254. Those are comprised of 119 men, 123 women and 12 non-residents. There have been 14 deaths and 67 people have required hospitalization.

The majority of the Lake County cases – 84 – are in Clermont. Forty have been reported in Leesburg, 10 in Lady Lake, seven in The Villages portion of the county and two in Fruitland Park. Other Lake County cases have been identified in Eustis (20), Tavares (17), Groveland (16), Mount Dora (16), Mascotte (12), Minneola (6), Sorrento (3), Okahumpka (1), Umatilla (1), Howey-in-the-Hills (1), Montverde (1), Grand Island (1), Paisley (1) and Yalaha (1).

All told, Florida is reporting 46,422 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 834 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 45,208 are residents. There have been 1,997 deaths and 8,304 have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
