Resident fumes that bridge access a long way off in Fenney

A new promotional video from The Villages is not placating a resident down south fuming about the lack of amenities and access to the rest of Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.

In the new “Vmail” from The Villages, Vice President of Sales Jennifer Parr climbs into a four-wheeler and takes a ride with Villages Director of Development Tommy McDonough for a tour of construction down south.

The video’s big reveal is McDonough’s prediction that the Chitty Chatty bridge will open in August or early September and that the Water Lily Bridge will open around the first of the year. The Chitty Chatty bridge will cross State Road 44 at Kristine Way near the Rohan Recreation Center. The Water Lily Bridge will cross the Florida Turnpike landing in the Village De Luna near the future Water Lily Recreation Center.

However, Village of DeSoto resident Greg Carpenter isn’t impressed.

“You folks should stop patting yourselves on the back, for all the new bridges, for how wonderful they are. The residents southwest of the turnpike have been neglected for a long time. We’ve been here for over a year and still no amenities,” Carpenter said.

He said the infrastructure and amenities are “ridiculous” south of State Road 44

“We been dealing with the enormous amount of trucks, road construction, that isn’t even close to completing,” he said.

In speaking with longtime Villagers, Carpenter said he learned things are taking place differently down south.

“The residents I talk to north of County Road 466A have all told me that the founder always built the infrastructure and amenities, before building houses. The young Morse family apparently really doesn’t care about the people south of 44. Just build, build, build,” he said.

“Before we bought our house, we were also told that we would be connected to Brownwood by the end of 2019. Again, nowhere close to completing. All your new homes east of the Turnpike will be able to cross 44 basically when they move in. We Fenney area residents will not be able to cross 44 until 2022,” he said.

He’s also wondering where his championship golf is.

“When are we going to get a championship golf course, south of 44? You folks had plenty of open area to build a course around Lowlands Executive Golf Course, which by the way is a nothing course,” he said.

But overall, he’s feeling neglected.

“As for patting yourselves on the back for the bridges that are being built, you should take care of the residents west of the turnpike,” he said.
