We cannot afford to defund our police

Congressman Daniel Webster

U.S. Rep. Cori Bush last week renewed Democrats’ call to defund the police while also stating she would obtain private security for herself. Her tone-deaf comments come at the same time murders have increased 16 percent in major cities across our country.

We are a nation of laws, and our police officers put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve their communities. The vast majority of the brave men and women in law enforcement that serve our communities are selfless servants that work tirelessly to protect us and our families from evil and ensure that our laws are upheld.

I am grateful for these many law enforcement officials who serve and protect our neighborhoods with humility and brotherly love.

These courageous public servants deserve our respect and confidence.

I have and will continue to work to ensure our law enforcement officers have the training, tools and resources needed to keep our neighborhoods and communities safe.

Congressman Daniel Webster represents The Villages in the U.S. House of Representatives.
