1929 – 2023
A funeral Mass for John “Jack” Allen Carruthers Jr., of The Villages, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on October 23, 2023 at St. Mark The Evangelist Church, 7081 SE Highway 42 Summerfield, FL. 34491.
Jack passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023, at the age of 94 while surrounded by family. He was born in Detroit MI. on June 18, 1929 to Viola and John Carruthers.
Jack grew up in a humble household with his two sisters, where he attended Southeastern High School and was a gifted football and track athlete. Jack was a devoted husband, loving father, Grandfather, great-Grandfather, Uncle and a War World II veteran with the US Marine Corps. In 1950 Jack married the love of his life, Marilyn (Hudson) and moved to DC then Maryland where he founded The Parkway Glass Corp. achieving great success.
Jack’s heart was filled with love for his late wife, Marilyn, their six children; Colleen Olexa (Mike), Mary Ellen Brown (Randy), Michael (Helen Marie), John (Theresa), Thomas (Cathy), Meg Dodge (Steve); his Grandchildren; Shawn (Karyssa), Thomas, Christopher (Emma), Hope (Raymond), Mitch, Kyle, Jack, Kevin and Caiti; his great-grandkids: Lacey, Ethan, Quincy, Darcy and Gracie; as well as many more nieces, nephews and hundreds of others who he treated as family.
His favorite accomplishments were building a business that allowed him to provide a stable foundation for all six children, who became first-generation college graduates and being the first of his family to own their first home.
Known for his sense of humor, Jack loved sharing jokes and laughter over a chilled martini with family and friends. His dedication to community was evident through his involvement with many groups and organizations; Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce, The Marine Corps League DeLong Detachment, DeMatha Catholic HS Boosters Club, St Mark the Evangelist Church and the Adelphi Boys Club where he coached and mentored many kids.
Jack will be remembered for his love, laughter and selfless service to others. Leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories that will be forever in our hearts.
Following Mass, he will be laid to rest at the Florida National Veteran Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
