A Villager’s purse and Cadillac were stolen after an early morning home invasion in the Village of Santiago.

Michael A. Prouty, 39, who has a long criminal history and was released earlier this year from a Florida prison, forced his way into a home on Ballesteros Drive at about 7:30 a.m. where he stole a woman’s purse and cell phone before driving away in her Cadillac, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The Cadillac was sighted in Ocala and the Ocala Police Department at 11 a.m. began a pursuit. Prouty crashed the Cadillac and began to flee on foot. He was attempting to carjack another vehicle when he was taken into custody.

He has a criminal record that dates back to 2000, including 13 felony convictions which include several robbery charges. He is registered as a career offender.

He will be facing multiple charges in Sumter County.
