Drunk driving can shatter lives and devastate families

Ashley Moody
Attorney General Ashley Moody

This week, we urged Floridians to never drive under the influence. December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and also when Floridians are celebrating the holidays with friends and family.

During this time, we typically see an increase in drunk driving accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s latest nationwide data reveals that someone dies in a drunk driving accident every 39 minutes—that’s about 37 people every day. During December, drunk driving accidents increase, as there were 507 alcohol-impaired crashes in Florida—more crashes than any other month in 2023.

Law enforcement will have more deputies, officers and troopers monitoring our state’s roadways to help ensure Floridians remain safe throughout the holiday season. If you plan on drinking during any festivities, never get behind the wheel.

Please make sure you celebrate responsibly:

  • Never drive while or after drinking alcoholic beverages;
  • Always wear your seatbelt;
  • Call a cab or use a ridesharing service if there is no designated driver; and
  • Avoid distractions, especially texting while driving.

The American Automobile Association’s Tow to Go program gives free, confidential ride services to impaired drivers and their vehicles, available to both AAA members and nonmembers on most major holidays.

Also, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving website provides statistics, solutions and helplines to prevent drunk or drugged driving accidents.

Drunk driving can shatter lives and devastate families. Don’t let an irresponsible action take away cherished memories during the holiday season. By enjoying time with loved ones safely, we will continue building a Stronger, Safer Florida.
