Why can’t people return their shopping carts?

To the Editor:

I just found a big ding on the passenger side of my car and I strongly suspect it came from a shopping cart. I did not notice it right away. But one of the last places I was at was Publix.

I see so many shopping carts carelessly left in the parking lot. Store employees cannot gather them up as fast as shoppers are leaving them out there.

Why can’t people return their shopping carts? We are’t asking for much.
