St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on County Road 462 now is within the Wildwood city limits.

Commissioners voted Monday to annex the 35-acre church property.

The annexation accompanies a church expansion project. The second floor of the Family Life Center recently was renovated.

A Sumter County policy requires city annexation for properties in the joint planning area when construction or expansion is planned. The joint planning area is where a city plans future boundary growth.

The church is served by Wildwood water and sewer services.

Commissioner Joe Elliott said he welcomes the church into the city.

“I would anticipate that the annexation would allow a closer relationship between the city and the church because there are a lot of things going on at the church,” he said.

The annexation is the latest of many over the past year due to the county policy, often involving small lots.

Several lots have been annexed at the former Wildwood Country Resort, now known as Hearty Host Lake Resort, along Buena Vista Boulevard south of State Road 44.

When property is annexed, it becomes the jurisdiction of the Wildwood Police Department.

Although the annexed lots sometimes are scattered, Police Chief Randy Parmer said it doesn’t cause a problem for police due to the skills of Sumter County dispatchers at sorting out city from county property and roads.
