Our community mourns the loss of a remarkable leader with the passing of former Sumter County Sheriff William “Bill” Farmer. Sheriff Farmer was a true servant leader, whose life is marked by extraordinary dedication to public service. Sheriff Farmer began his career in law enforcement nearly 5 decades ago, serving as a patrolman, criminal investigator, and Chief Deputy before being elected as Sumter County Sheriff in 1996.

Sheriff Bill Farmer

Over seven terms and 28 years, he faithfully led the Sheriff’s Office with integrity.

Sheriff Farmer also generously gave his time and leadership to sheriffs across Florida. He served two terms as Chairman of the Sheriff’s Youth Ranch Board of Directors and as President of Florida Sheriff’s Association. He also served as the Sheriff’s Association Chaplain for the last 8 years until his retirement.

It is impossible to fully measure the impact that Sheriff Farmer leaves on Sumter County and the state of Florida. Sandy and I extend our prayers to his family, friends and loved ones as we honor his life and enduring legacy of service.
