A romantically rebuffed woman from Michigan threatened to expose a Villager’s “swinging” lifestyle when he did not return her affection.
Genevieve Barber, 63, of Pontiac, Mich. was arrested Thursday by Sumter County sheriff’s deputies on charges of stalking and video voyeurism.
An investigation into her behavior began on Nov. 17 when a Villager who had been the object of Barber’s affection discovered that his vehicle had been keyed. The man told deputies that Barber had been “harassing and possibly stalking him both in person and through social media.”
Barber had been legally banned from the man’s home following a Nov. 9 incident in which she showed up intoxicated. She was reportedly upset about the death of her brother. The man allowed Barber into his home and arranged for her to catch an early flight back to Michigan. He even agreed to drive her to the airport. However, Barber became enraged when she learned about what the man would be doing after he dropped her off at the airport. The details of the man’s post-airport plans were redacted from the arrest report. Barber became “irate and refused to leave.” The man called law enforcement and deputies escorted her from the home with a legal trespass notice barring her from returning.
Though she was banned from his property, Barber continued to stalk the man through social media. She sent screenshots of a Facebook account using the man’s name that appeared to be associated with “affair” and “swinging” groups. Barber threatened to send the images to the man’s children. She also sent him a screenshot of what appeared to be a school website displaying a photo and email address for the man’s son.
Barber also sent “a lengthy message” to the man’s daughter, claiming he was “experiencing medical issues, acting aggressively” and that he was “not himself.”
The man told deputies that Barber had also been following him in public and on one occasion showed up at Lake Sumter Landing. The man. was at the square with another woman and Barber “followed them between multiple establishments.” Barber appeared to be taking photos or videos of them, the man’s lady friend told deputies.
The man explicitly told Barber on Nov. 24 to cease trying to contact him. She responded by sending the man a nude photo of himself.
“In the image, he is facing away from the person taking the photograph, is not posing, and appears unaware the photograph was being taken,” a deputy wrote in the arrest report.
The man told deputies that he had been unaware the photo existed and he never gave her permission to take it.
Barber was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $7,000 bond.
