What I love about The Villages is all the different regional “accents” that I do hear.
Oh, I asked a lady at a pet store in Brownwood. Are you from Canada? No, I am from New Hampshire.
I rarely get spoofed, as I must admit I have become a bit of a linguistic freak. I have been asked by many local folks. Are you from Upstate NY or Jersey? I reply that I was brought up in Montreal, and English speaking folks from Montreal, especially those with a Jewish or Italian heritage do sound like New Yorkers. Whereas the rest of Canada has regional accents too. Yes ‘oots and aboots’, but I hear that from folks from the Boston area too, I am told that is the Scottish influence.
I must admit that I get fooled with y’all and a Southern drawl. Florida natives do not talk like that. Is Florida a southern state?
As today unfolds I am sure that once again I will be intrigued and often fooled by what I may hear is a Montrealer whose native tongue is English! The absence of “eh” and no “oots and aboots.” I guess you are from Albany New York, or New Jersey?
Enjoy the sunshine and 70F (or 21C) temps.
