Gary Elroy Mielke

Gary Elroy Mielke, 84, of Lady Lake, Florida, formerly of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on November 30, 2025. A devoted husband, father, and friend, Gary will be remembered for his steadfast work ethic, love of the outdoors, and deep devotion to his family.

Born on October 16, 1941, in Saginaw, to Elroy and Ethel Mielke. Gary grew up surrounded by the waters that would become such a central part of his life. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army, he began a lifelong career sailing the Great Lakes, starting as a deckhand and working his way up to captain—a testament to his dedication and perseverance. His time on the water shaped not only his professional life but also his character: steady, reliable, and grounded.

Gary met his beloved wife, Elaine Trapp Ackley Mielke, through mutual friends. After a brief courtship, the two married on April 28,1967 and built a warm and full life together. They made their home in Rogers City before purchasing the Hessel Grocery and returning to Gary’s childhood town of Hessel/Cedarville. Together, they raised their family with love, laughter, and hard work. Elaine preceded Gary in death, but her memory remained a guiding star in his life.

Outside of work, Gary found joy in hunting, fishing, and boating, passing his appreciation for nature and the water on to his children. He cherished his time on the golf course with his Friday and Saturday leagues and the fellowship those games brought.

Gary is survived by his daughters, Melissa & DonMeadows and Mary & Vance Barber, his sons, Michael Otto & DanielleMielke and John & SueAckley. Grand kids Ashley, Courtney, Shelbi, Johnny, Ashlee, Sydney, Morgan, Billy, Harper, and Jeffery. Great grand kids William, Ava, & Elliana.

Per Gary’s wishes, no service will take place.

As Billy Graham once said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Gary exemplified that truth every day of his life.
