A Summerfield man was arrested with cocaine and a glass pipe after the vehicle in which he was traveling was stopped for speeding near Oxford Oaks.

A gray 2007 GMC pickup truck sped past a deputy around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Radar confirmed its occupants, including 49-year-old Roman Lopez Gonzalez, were going 52 miles per hour in a 40-mph zone. The vehicle’s brake lights were also not working.

Seeing this, the deputy stopped the vehicle on County Road 209 near Oxford Oaks. He then approached the occupants and noticed Lopez Gonzalez was not wearing a seatbelt. Both he and the female driver proceeded to show argumentative behavior that was not typical of a traffic stop, the report said.

They argued about the speed they were going and about the inoperable brake lights. The pair next started to eat food to draw attention away from the investigation. Their odd behavior prompted the deputy to request a K-9 unit come to the scene to assist, the report said.

The K-9 ultimately alerted to the presence of narcotics, and a search of the vehicle ensued. The deputies found a black bag with multiple zippered compartments on the floor of the passenger side where Lopez Gonzalez was seated. Inside was a white napkin folded around a clear glass tube with black cocaine residue, the report said.

There was a small blue metal container in the passenger-side door compartment, as well. Unscrewing the lid revealed a small rock of cocaine, the report said.

Lopez Gonzalez was subsequently arrested on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and cocaine. The native of Puerto Rico was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center with bond set at $3,500.
