Four people were hospitalized after an eight-vehicle pileup shut down Interstate 75 near the Sumter-Marion County Line.

The crash occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday when a 66-year-old Irvine, Kentucky man was driving a white 2008 Lincoln utility vehicle northbound on I-75 near Mile Marker 335 and failed to slow down for traffic ahead of him, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. He crashed into a vehicle ahead of him, setting in motion a chain-reaction collision. He was transported by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center along with three passengers, an 84-year-old female, a 76-year-old female, and a 54-year-old female, all from Irvine, Kentucky. Two of the vehicle’s front airbags deployed in the crash.

The Kentucky man driving the vehicle was ticketed on a charge of careless driving.

The occupants of the other vehicles, who were from, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Oldsmar, Zephyrhills, Dunedin and Canton, Ga., were not injured.
