A Villager got a break in a hit-and-run case when his drunk driving charge was reduced to a charge of reckless driving.

Aaron Robert Neilson 53, of the Village of Richmond was sentenced to time served and ordered to pay $756 in fines and court costs after pleading no contest to the reckless driving charge this past week in Sumter County Court. He had spent a single night in jail after his May 7 arrest.

The Denver, Colo. native had been driving a Toyota Tacoma on Meggison Road when his vehicle collided with a Volkswagen Jetta, causing about $2,000 in damage to the Jetta. The Jetta driver began following Neilson, who pulled a U-turn and ordered the Jetta driver to “stop following him,” according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

It appeared Neilson had been drinking, but he refused to provide a breath sample.

He was originally arrested on charges of driving under the influence and hit and run. The DUI charge was reduced and the hit-and-run charge was tossed out.
