
Merla Sue Hart, of Summerfield, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, in The Villages, Florida. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose life was marked by love, warmth, and simple joys.
Born in Evansville, Indiana, Merla carried her Midwestern roots with her throughout her life. On June 8, 1963, she married the love of her life, Robert L. Hart Sr., with whom she shared many devoted years until his passing in August 2025.
Merla dedicated many years of her professional life to JCPenney, where she built lasting relationships and took pride in her work. She also took great pleasure in selling Mary Kay for several years, enjoying the friendships and connections she made along the way.
She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Merla loved working in her yard, where she created beauty and peace. She had a special fondness for collecting penguins and loved all things Longaberger, both of which brought her great joy. She also cherished time at the beach and, above all, treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children: Robin (Steve) Thompson, Lyndy (Dean) Keith, and Bud (Bonnie) Hart; eight grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren, all of whom will carryforward her legacy of love.
Funeral services will be held on April 15 at Heirs-Baxley Funeral Home in The Villages, Florida. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will take place the following day at 12:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the caring staff at Buffalo Crossings and Cornerstone Hospice for their compassion and support.
Merla will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her loving heart, and the joy she brought to those around her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
