A Summerfield woman was arrested for battery after allegedly punching her mother and putting her in a “chokehold.”

The mother of 39-year-old Sara Katherine Sexton got off work as a nurse at a local hospital and returned to her family home on Southeast 100th Avenue in Summerfield on Tuesday evening, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

She asked Sexton to wash the dishes, which she began to do. But she left the water on, and the right sink started to overflow. The mother walked over and turned the faucet away to stop the water from overflowing any more, which caused Sexton to snap, the report said.

She threatened to hit the mother with a frying pan before punching her on the left side of her face. She then grabbed hold of the mother, who called for her husband to help. When he did so, Sexton ran off, the report said.

The mother later told deputies that everything happened so fast, she was not sure how Sexton grabbed her. Her husband advised that Sexton had her in a “chokehold” before fleeing to her bedroom, the report said.

The mother suffered red marks on her upper chest near her neck that looked like fingerprint impressions. She also had a red mark on the side of her face, and she was concerned her jaw was broken, the report said.

Sexton later stated the mother was talking crap to her as she did the dishes. She responded by splashing water on the mother and walking away to her bedroom. However, the mother then threw objects at her, which she claimed were knives or spoons, so she quickly walked to her room to call law enforcement, the report said.

She sustained redness and swelling on her right hand, and she admitted that she was right-handed. She denied any physical altercation and claimed the mother injured herself. When confronted again about the battery, she stated she went after the mother because she was throwing stuff at her. The mother dodged it and went for a knife, causing her to leave, the report said.

Sexton was ultimately arrested and placed in the back of a patrol car, the report said. On the way to jail, she said, “I broke her jaw, fair and square.” She then turned to the deputy, saying, “Remember when I didn’t say that last time, and you said that I said it?” Now yelling, she continued, “I remember. So write it down now, ‘cause I said it this time.”

A subsequent check of her criminal history revealed a previous battery conviction in Marion County on Feb. 18, 2009, the report said. She was also said to have mental health issues, but was not having an episode at the time of her arrest.

Sexton was charged with domestic battery (second or subsequent offense) and booked at Marion County Jail without bond.
