An unpopular plan for a recreational vehicle (RV) campground north of the curve on County Road 462 was withdrawn before the Wildwood City Commission could vote on the project.

City Planning Director Melanie Strickland told commissioners Monday that she received a letter from the developer’s attorney withdrawing requests for rezoning and a comprehensive plan amendment.

Last month, Special Magistrate Lindsay C.T. Holt recommended denial of the project at a meeting of the Wildwood Planning and Zoning Board after hearing opposition from more than a half dozen nearby residents.

The project by Eddie Small of E. Small Developing, LLC, called for up to 99 RV sites on 10 acres along the west side of County Road 121.

An environmental evaluation found no evidence of protected species on the property including gopher tortoises.

A traffic study determined no need for additional turn lanes for the development.

But city planning staff also recommended denial due to safety issues caused by the greater turning radius of a large RV.

An assisted living center originally was proposed for the property and Mayor Ed Wolf said he was skeptical about the proposed campground.

“When I saw this, I said this is not the place for this,” he said.

Neighbors, including two who said they have owned Rvs, expressed their opposition at two public hearings.

Hunter Hampton, a full-time RV’er for 15 years, said the vehicles are up to 45-feet-long, often pulling a car behind.

“I just don’t think this is physically possible,” she said of large RVs trying to turn into the proposed campground.
