A Wildwood woman was arrested for battery after allegedly grabbing her husband’s neck at the PepperTree Apartments.
An officer responded to PepperTree Apartments, located at 3793 Pepper Tree Lane, regarding a domestic disturbance around 11:10 a.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. Upon arrival, the officer met with some married residents, 30-year-old Shakira Kyana Darden and her husband.
The former stated they were arguing over her refusal to sign a “document” he had prepared, which apparently contained “false accusations.” He was looking through her text messages on her computer, then “threatened to smash” her phone and the computer. She concluded by saying nothing physical happened between her and her husband, the report said.
However, her husband had visible scratch marks going down his left forearm that looked fresh or recent due to the minimal bleeding. He also had a large, circular red mark or fresh bruise on the right side of his neck. He advised that Darden caused those injuries after being asked about them, the report said.
He explained that Darden had several mental health conditions, including Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder, for which she takes antipsychotic medications. He believed she had not been taking her meds recently due to her erratic and physically aggressive behavior toward him, the report said.
Her most recent prescription bottle had been filled for 30 pills on April 28, with instructions to take one pill each day. There were still several pills inside the medication bottle, suggesting Darden was not taking her antipsychotic meds. The report noted her husband was emotionally distraught during their conversation about this, as he would take several breaks to prevent himself from crying while speaking, the report said.
He ultimately advised that in the morning, he typed a letter of conditions that Darden needed to follow for him to stay with her. He went to their bedroom and asked her to discuss the letter with him. He indicated that he told her the issues he was having with her, to which she responded by “wishing death” on him and his family, the report said.
He asked Darden if she was taking her medications, and she stated she was. She next got off the bed, approached him and began to “grab” at him. He blocked her with his left arm as she did so. Darden proceeded to use her right arm to grab her husband’s neck and squeeze, but he could still breathe, the report said.
When speaking with Darden, the officer asked if she had injured him. She advised that “he did it himself.” She added that she had been taking her antipsychotic meds, and she denied causing her husband’s injuries, the report said.
The report noted the couple’s two juvenile children were in the apartment at the time of the altercation. The oldest saw nothing but heard them arguing.
Darden was arrested on charge of battery and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. Bond was set at $500.
